Mahabharata
Hanuman has a crucial part to play!
We are all familiar with Lord Hanuman’s significant role in Ramayana. But only a few of us know that Lord Hanuman also appears in the epic Mahabharata, that too twice. It is a well-known fact that Lord Hanuman is one of the ‘Chiranjeevi’s’. Chiranjeevis are the people who are supposed to be immortals. Hanuman, being one of the Chiranjeevis has been granted the boon to live forever.
The first mention of Lord Hanuman in Mahabharata comes when He meets Bhima during the Pandava’s exile and the second time when Lord Hanuman protects the chariot of Arjuna throughout the battle of Kurukshetra by residing in Arjuna’s flag.
The Mahabharata is a major epic that has a short mention of Hanuman. In Book 3, the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, he is presented as a half-brother of Bhima, who meets him accidentally on his way to Mount Kailasha.
A man of extraordinary strength, Bhima is unable to move Hanuman’s tail, making him realize and acknowledge the power of Hanuman. This story attests to the ancient chronology of the Hanuman character. It is also a part of artwork and reliefs such as those at the Vijayanagara ruins.
