Hailed as Bholenath, Mahadev, Shankar, and various other names, Lord Shiva has incarnated several times to serve multiple purposes. He is also called Mahākāla as all the three times, past, present, and future lie within him and are from him. He is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism.

We need to learn more about the avatars of Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva is one of the towering deities of the Hindu trinity. He is hailed as the “destroyer” while Brahma is the “creator” and Vishnu is the “protector”. Nonetheless, the “destruction” referred to here is not the dogmatic destruction of creation but the intrinsic negative human traits, imperfections, and illusions. And this “destruction” paves the way for creation all over again. Therefore, Lord Shiva could be best described as a “constructive destroyer.” 

This Hindu deity, in a human form, is seen sitting in a meditative posture. It is Lord Shiva who is also worshipped in the form of a Linga. It is said that the Linga form of Lord Shiva came into being on the Chaturdashi Tithi, Krishna Paksha in Phalguna month (as per the Purnimant calendar).

This auspicious day is also believed to be when Lord Shiva (Purusha) united with Parvati (Shakti). Therefore, the day, popular as Maha Shivratri, commemorates the Lord and his consort’s marriage. 

Shiva is the primal Atman (Self) of the universe. There are many both benevolent and fearsome depictions of Shiva. In benevolent aspects, he is depicted as an omniscient Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash as well as a householder with his wife Parvati and his three children, Ganesha, Ashok Sundari, and Kartikeya. 

In his fierce aspects, he is often depicted as slaying demons. Shiva is also known as Adiyogi Shiva, regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation, and arts.

    1. Thank you Arun Ji. On one of my reader’s request I started this post on Lord Shiva. “He” is very kind and we remember him all the time. Om Namah Shivae is the beej mantra. It is believed that chanting this mantra removes all kinds of obstacles. – By chanting this mantra , lust, anger, hatred, attachment, greed, fear, nostalgia etc. – Chanting the mantra of Om Namah Shivaya creates courage and enthusiasm in a person. This mantra is always in my mind. 😊😊🙏🙏
