Devaki had a brother, Kansa, a tyrant, who along with some other demon kings was terrorizing Mother Earth.

 Kansa had usurped the throne of Mathura from his father, the benevolent King Ugrasen.

After the wedding of Devki to Yadva prince Vasudeva, Kansa drove the newlywed couple to the palace in the royal chariot. 

But before Kansa could reach the palace a divine was heard saying,” Kansa, with this marriage your days on this earth are numbered. The eighth son of your sister will kill you and your rule in Mathura will come to an end.”
